Recap of the Pi Day SpaceX Rocket Launch from Cape Canaveral
SpaceX celebrated Pi Day in style on Saturday, March 14, 2026, with a successful Falcon 9 rocket launch from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station . The mission, designated Starlink 10-48, lifted off at 8:37 a.m. EDT from Launch Complex 40 after a brief delay from an earlier target time .
The Launch
The Falcon 9 rocket carried the next batch of 29 Starlink internet satellites to low-Earth orbit . The launch commentator marked the occasion with a special countdown, announcing: “10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, Pi, 2, 1, ignition, engines full power and liftoff” .
Fittingly, Pi Day—celebrated on 3/14—honors the mathematical constant pi (3.14159…), which is actually used in calculating orbital trajectories for space missions . The Falcon 9 traveled on a northeast trajectory after liftoff .

Booster Landing
Approximately eight and a half minutes after liftoff, the Falcon 9’s first-stage booster successfully landed on SpaceX’s autonomous drone ship “Just Read the Instructions” stationed in the Atlantic Ocean . Although the onboard camera feed was temporarily unavailable, cameras on the drone ship confirmed the landing . No sonic booms were heard in Brevard County due to the offshore landing .
Weather and Visibility
The Space Force 45th Weather Squadron predicted a 75% chance of favorable weather during the launch window . Skies over Brevard County were partly to mostly cloudy, and the rocket disappeared quickly into the clouds after liftoff, remaining visible to spectators for less than a minute .
Launch Context and History
This mission marked SpaceX’s 18th launch from Florida’s Space Coast in 2026 and the 32nd Falcon 9 flight overall for the company this year . The booster used for this flight was flying for the sixth time, having previously supported five other Starlink missions .
The launch occurred on the 24th birthday of SpaceX, which was founded by Elon Musk in 2002 . Since its first Falcon 1 launch attempt in 2006, the company has now flown the Falcon 9 rocket a total of 614 times, with only two launch failures .
Next Launch
SpaceX is targeting St. Patrick’s Day, Tuesday, March 17 at 6:26 a.m. EDT for its next Falcon 9 launch from Cape Canaveral, another Starlink mission .
