Explosion Strikes During Peace Demonstration
The death toll from Sunday’s suicide bombing outside Kabal Police Station in Swat has risen to 17, while 19 people remain injured, including two in critical condition, police confirmed on Monday. The blast occurred during a peace rally organized by local residents protesting the resurgence of terrorism in the Swat Valley .
According to Swat District Police Officer Muhammad Umar Khan, the suspected suicide bomber’s head was recovered from the scene, and preliminary investigations suggest the attacker was allegedly an Afghan national. The explosion caused partial damage to the main gate of the police station and triggered panic among rally participants, with several people caught in the blast and ensuing stampede .
Police officials attributed the attack to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also referred to as Fitna al-Khawarij . The attack killed seven police personnel and 10 civilians, with all victims shifted to Central Hospital Swat for treatment .
National Leadership Condemns Attack
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the attack, extending condolences to the victims’ families. The Prime Minister directed authorities to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured and reaffirmed that the government’s fight against terrorism would continue until it is “completely eradicated” . President Zardari stated that “terrorists will never succeed in their malicious attempts to undermine peace, national unity and the writ of the state” .
KP Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi sought a report from the provincial inspector general of police, vowing that “enemies of peace would not be allowed to succeed” . Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi praised the police for preventing the suicide bomber from entering the police station, stating that the brave officers “set the highest example of courage and duty” .
Malala Yousafzai Reacts
Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai, who hails from Swat, expressed being “heartbroken” by the bombing in her hometown. She extended her deepest condolences to the victims’ families, saying she could not imagine their pain. Yousafzai survived a Taliban attack in Swat in 2012 and has since become a global advocate for girls’ education .
Investigation Underway
A police contingent, led by DPO Umar Khan, reached the scene immediately after the blast. Authorities have cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to trace the attackers’ suspected facilitators. “The perpetrators of this attack and their facilitators will be identified and brought to justice,” the DPO said. No group has yet officially claimed responsibility for the attack, though police attribute it to TTP-linked militants .
