A police case has been registered against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi following a complaint filed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP accused Gandhi of causing injuries to two of its Members of Parliament (MPs, Pratap Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput) during a protest outside Parliament on Wednesday. The altercation occurred amidst a demonstration by both Treasury and Opposition benches, leading to tension between the parties.
Injuries and Allegations Against Gandhi
According to reports, the incident took place when Rahul Gandhi allegedly pushed BJP MP Mukesh Rajput, causing him to fall and injure Pratap Sarangi, who was nearby. Sarangi later recounted the events, stating that he was standing near the stairs when Rajput fell on him after being pushed by Gandhi. Both injured MPs were taken to the hospital for treatment.
In the police case, Gandhi has been charged with multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including voluntary causing grievous hurt, endangering life, criminal force, criminal intimidation, and common intention. The BJP has even gone so far as to accuse Gandhi of attempted murder. Anurag Thakur, a former Union Minister and BJP MP, along with fellow MPs Bansuri Swaraj and Hemang Joshi, lodged the complaint, claiming that Gandhi’s actions led to the injuries of the MPs.
Gandhi Denies Allegations, Congress Files Counter-Complaint
Rahul Gandhi dismissed the allegations, calling them an attempt by the BJP to divert attention from remarks made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah about Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Gandhi also rejected the charge of hooliganism, maintaining that the accusations were politically motivated.
In response to the accusations, the Congress Party filed its own complaint, with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge alleging that BJP MPs had pushed him during the protest, causing injuries to his legs. Meanwhile, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Phangnon Konyak accused Gandhi of shouting at her during the protest, describing his behavior as inappropriate for the Leader of the Opposition. Konyak confirmed she has filed a separate complaint with the Rajya Sabha chairman about Gandhi’s conduct.
Protests Outside Parliament
The protests, which were held outside the Makar Dwar of Parliament House, reportedly began peacefully but escalated when the altercations took place. The incident has sparked further political tension between the Congress and BJP, with both parties accusing each other of physical provocation.
