President Donald Trump, 78, has been pronounced in “excellent health” following his first annual medical check-up since reclaiming the presidency. The results, released Sunday by the White House, reflect a largely positive assessment of both his physical and mental fitness.
Conducted at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the exam included a full physical, cognitive testing, and evaluations of past medical conditions. It marks the first such report since Trump returned to the Oval Office following his historic comeback in the 2024 election.
Physician’s Report: Fit for Office
A letter from White House physician Dr. Sean Barbabella confirmed the former president’s “excellent cognitive and physical health,” stating that Trump is “fully fit to execute the duties of the Commander-in-Chief and Head of State.”
The report did highlight a few minor issues:
- Sun damage to the skin, attributed to age and prolonged exposure.
- Scarring on his right ear, a lasting result of the assassination attempt he survived in July 2024.
- Diverticulosis, a common condition in older adults involving small pouches in the colon. It was found during a colonoscopy last year along with a benign polyp, which requires a follow-up in three years.
Trump is currently prescribed four medications:
- Two cholesterol-lowering drugs
- Aspirin for cardiovascular health
- A topical steroid cream for skin maintenance
Noticeable Weight Loss and Active Lifestyle
Trump, who has long claimed to be in superior physical condition, now weighs 224 pounds (101.6 kg), down from 243 pounds in 2019, indicating a notable drop. At 6-foot-3, the weight places him just outside the obese category on the BMI scale.
The physician’s statement praised his “active lifestyle”, referencing his “frequent victories in golf events” — a favorite talking point of the president, who has often used his golf performance as evidence of stamina and strength.
Despite his aversion to alcohol and smoking, Trump is known for his love of fast food and well-done steaks. Even so, his slimmer appearance in recent months has raised speculation about a modified diet or increased activity.
Cognitive Test: ‘Every Answer Right’
Trump, often eager to prove his mental acuity, told reporters after the exam, “I took a cognitive test. I don’t know what to tell you other than I got every answer right.” He shared this remark while traveling on Air Force One, clearly relishing the moment.
The White House confirmed that Trump underwent a full cognitive screening as part of the check-up, amid continued scrutiny of presidential health and decision-making capacity.
Medical Transparency Questioned
While the White House pledged transparency, it comes amid a long history of controversial and exaggerated health claims from Trump’s previous medical teams.
Back in 2015, during Trump’s first campaign, his longtime physician Dr. Harold Bornstein released a hyperbolic letter asserting Trump would be the “healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency” — a claim Bornstein later admitted Trump had dictated himself.
In 2018, Dr. Ronny Jackson, Trump’s White House doctor during his first term, famously declared that with an improved diet, the president could “live to be 200 years old.” Jackson also noted Trump should aim to lose 10-15 pounds but said there were “no signs of any cognitive issues.”
By 2019, however, Trump’s weight had increased to 243 pounds, technically placing him in the obese category, according to CDC standards.
Health a Key Issue in 2024 Election
The health and age of both presidential candidates became a central issue in the 2024 election, with Trump and then-President Joe Biden being the oldest major party candidates in U.S. history.

Trump, frequently highlighting his energy and “mental sharpness,” often took jabs at Biden, who was 82 at the time, calling him “mentally unfit” and “too frail” for office.
Those criticisms intensified after Biden’s shaky performance during a June 2024 debate, which drew wide concern over his cognitive capabilities. The backlash eventually contributed to Biden withdrawing from the race, paving the way for Trump’s return to power.
Looking Ahead: Fit for a Demanding Role
While skeptics may still question Trump’s medical transparency, the newly released report paints a picture of a president in good health, both mentally and physically. With a lighter frame, no major red flags, and a confident cognitive showing, Trump appears ready to take on the rigors of a second term in the White House.
Whether this assessment satisfies public curiosity remains to be seen, but for now, the message from the White House is loud and clear: Trump is fit and focused on the road ahead.
