Islamabad, May 12, 2025: Every year on May 12, the world pauses to celebrate International Nurses Day, a tribute to the tireless efforts and vital contributions of nurses across the globe.

This day also commemorates the birth of Florence Nightingale, the trailblazer of modern nursing.

In 2025, the theme — “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies” — brings sharp focus to the urgent need for investing in nurses’ well-being to uplift both healthcare and economic resilience.

Marking a pivotal shift from past themes, this year emphasizes the economic strength that stems from a supported and healthy nursing workforce.

It’s not just about care at the bedside — it’s about safeguarding public health infrastructure, empowering female-led professions, and ensuring healthcare systems remain sustainable in crises.

Experts note that healthier nurses lead to better patient outcomes, stronger communities, and more resilient national economies.

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) urges immediate investments in nurses’ mental, physical, and emotional well-being.

Without adequate support, nurses are left vulnerable to burnout, staff shortages, and declining morale.

As countries continue to recover from the long shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic, stakeholders are being called upon to move beyond applause and into action — through better pay, fair staffing ratios, mental health support, and leadership opportunities for nurses.

A Legacy Built Over Decades

The idea of a day to honor nurses first emerged in 1953, when Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health proposed it to President Eisenhower.

While initially overlooked, the vision became reality in 1965, when the ICN established International Nurses Day, selecting May 12 — Nightingale’s birthday — as its permanent date.

The symbolism of the lamp, drawn from Nightingale’s rounds during the Crimean War, has since become a global emblem of hope and service.

Why International Nurses Day Matters More Than Ever

Nurses today are more than caregivers — they are advocates, researchers, educators, and leaders.

This day shines a spotlight on the multifaceted roles nurses play and the challenges they face, including long hours, workplace stress, inadequate pay, and limited career growth.

By recognizing these hurdles, International Nurses Day 2025 calls on policymakers, health organizations, and the public to take meaningful steps: improve working conditions, expand educational access, and elevate nurses’ voices in healthcare leadership.

As Nightingale once said, “Let us never consider ourselves finished nurses… we must be learning all of our lives.”

As we celebrate International Nurses Day 2025, let’s not stop at gratitude — let’s fuel action. Stand up for the nurses who never sit down.
