The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has delivered a decisive verdict, instructing Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to initiate intra-party elections within the next 20 days. In its announcement, the ECP explicitly stated that the preceding elections conducted by PTI did not meet the standards of transparency mandated by the Constitution.

According to the ECP’s directives, PTI is obligated to organize the intra-party elections within the specified 20-day period. Additionally, the party must promptly submit election reports within seven days following the conclusion of the electoral process. The electoral body expressed its reservations regarding the objectionable and controversial nature of PTI’s intra-party election reports, categorically rejecting them.

Despite the critical assessment, the ECP adopted a measured approach, stating, “The Election Commission is taking a soft approach before taking any action.” However, it issued a stern warning that failure on PTI’s part to conduct the elections within the designated 20-day timeframe may result in severe consequences, including potential disqualification from participating in future elections.

The ECP underscored the gravity of the situation, stating, “If PTI does not hold elections, it will be ineligible to collect election symbols for Majlis Shura elections.” This declaration emphasizes the potential far-reaching implications for PTI’s political standing and participation in democratic processes.

The verdict signifies the ECP’s commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring transparency in the functioning of political parties. It also serves as a reminder of the pivotal role of electoral bodies in preserving the integrity of democratic processes and holding political entities accountable to the established norms and regulations.

As PTI navigates this directive, the political landscape in Pakistan may witness significant developments with implications for the party’s future and its engagement in the electoral arena.
