Females to drive pink buses
KARACHI/ISLAMABAD: The Sindh government decided to launch special programs to train females to drive pink buses specifically for its flagship women-only pink buses project.
Provincial Minister for Information and Transport, Sharjeel Inam Memon, approved this decision. He gave approval during the 10th board meeting of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA).
During the meeting, Memon stated that the inclusion of female bus drivers would promote gender equality. He also said that it would enhance the sense of safety and security during women’s commutes.

He emphasized that empowering women in all fields aligned with the vision of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
The meeting also addressed the possibility of providing subsidies for the People’s Bus Service following approval by the cabinet.
Additionally, the board discussed the feasibility studies for the second phase of the Peoples Bus Service. It involves adding 500 buses and introducing an environment-friendly electric taxi service.
Memon expressed optimism that implementing the second phase of the People’s Bus Service would significantly reduce travel problems for the people. It will also provide relief to the public.
Furthermore, he highlighted that introducing an environment-friendly electric taxi service would not only have a positive impact on the environment but also generate new employment opportunities.
During the SMTA board meeting, they also reviewed the progress of the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. Attendees of the meeting included Transport Secretary Saleem Rajput, SMTA Managing Director Kamal Dayo, Traffic Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic Ahmed Nawaz Cheema, planning and development department representative Sikandar Shaikh, and Karachi Transport Chief Executive Officer Tufail Paliju.
