KARACHI: Four policemen have been arrested in Karachi who extorted money from renowned cricketers Sohaib Maqsood and Amir Yameen.

The Sindh Police arrested four police officers on Tuesday after Pakistani cricketers Sohaib Maqsood and Aamir Yamin complained about extortion on social media, with Maqsood and Yamin expressing relief that they live in Punjab and not Sindh. The cricketers claimed they were targeted and subjected to unwarranted demands for money during an encounter with law enforcement officers.

The cricketers were playing for Multan Regions in the National T20 Cup when they were allegedly detained by police on their way home from Karachi and demanded money.

The Sindh Police promptly arrested four officers from the Sakrand police station in connection with the incident. The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Shaheed Benazirabad, Parvez Chandio, confirmed the four policemen’s involvement in the alleged extortion and indicated that a complaint had been filed against them.

According to the Sindh police spokesperson, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Sakrand police station and other officials have been suspended for negligence and an official FIR has been filed against them, and legal action has been commenced.

The Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Riffat Mukhtar took notice of the cricketers’ social media posts and initiated an inquiry into the matter.

The police department has emphasized its commitment to upholding integrity and accountability within its ranks, stating that any form of corruption or misconduct will not be tolerated.

What’s the backstory?

Sohaib Maqsood and Aamer Yamin shared their ordeal on social media, criticizing the Sindh Police and expressing relief that they did not live in Sindh.

“We are lucky to live in Punjab rather than Sindh.” “This was my first time traveling by road from Karachi to Multan, and the Sindh police’s corruption is evident,” Sohaib Maqsood said on X (previously Twitter).

“Even after we explained we were international cricketers heading home after our match in Karachi, they still extorted 8000 rupees from us,” Maqsood said in a statement to reporters.

Aamer Yamin expressed similar feelings and even identified key authorities in his social media post to draw their attention to the matter.

This incident has sparked discussions about the need for transparency and ethical conduct within law enforcement agencies. The arrest of the four police officers serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding the rule of law and holding individuals accountable for their actions, regardless of their position.

The Sindh Police have assured the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted to address the allegations and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
