PIA pilots advised against flying while fasting

Pilots and cabin crew of the national flag carrier have been instructed not to undertake flying duties while observing fasts, highlighting concerns for both personal and public safety.

According to a communication addressed to all cabin crew members, both the Corporate Safety Management and the Aircrew Medical Centre have advised that although fasting during flights is theoretically possible, it significantly elevates the risk levels and reduces the margin of safety.

The document elaborates on potential dangers, noting that in emergency situations, the possibility of incorrect or delayed responses could lead to grave outcomes, a risk compounded by fasting-induced impairments in judgment and physical capacity. It underscores that while the practice of fasting holds undeniable religious importance, the physiological effects of fasting — such as diminished attention, slower reflexes, and reduced stamina — make flying under such conditions perilous for both crew and passengers, as well as individuals on the ground.

Given these considerations, the letter explicitly advises all crew members who are fasting to abstain from flying duties. This stance is further supported by an official spokesperson for the airline, who confirmed that a directive to this effect has been issued to ensure compliance.

This advisory aligns with the Civil Aviation Rules (CARs) 1994, specifically rule 41(3), which prohibits crew members from exercising their license privileges while fasting, thereby prioritizing safety in aviation operations.
