ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman said third of Pakistan is under flood water and relief efforts are underway to reach out to millions of displaced people.

Sherry Rehman said, “literally a third of the country is under water, comparing scenes from the disaster to a dystopian movie.”

The ongoing floods and rains have led to 1,100 fatalities across the country, she added.

The rains that began in June unleashed the worst flooding in more than a decade, washing away swathes of vital crops and damaging or destroying more than a million homes. Three provinces _ Balochistan, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have reported massive damage to infrastructure along with casualties.

Authorities and charity organizations are struggling to accelerate aid delivery to more than 33 million people affected.

In the south and west, dry land is limited, with displaced people crammed onto elevated highways and railroad tracks to escape the flooded plains.

Pakistan receives heavy and often destructive rains during its annual monsoon season, which are crucial for agriculture and water supplies.
