Shubman Gill

India will receive a massive boost ahead of their upcoming T20I series against South Africa with the return of star batter Shubman Gill, who has been declared fully fit and ready to play. Head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed the development on Saturday, describing Gill as “fit and fine, hungry to go,” as India turns its attention to the five-match T20I series starting Tuesday.

Gill had suffered a neck injury—believed to be a pinched nerve—during the Kolkata Test match last month. The injury forced him to miss the remainder of the Test series and the following ODIs against South Africa. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) initially placed him on a five-week rest-and-recovery program, which he completed at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. His return now provides India with stability at the top of the order for the T20Is.

Following India’s 2-1 ODI series win over South Africa, Gambhir assured the media that Gill had cleared all fitness tests.
Yes, Shubman is ready to start. That’s why he has been selected. And obviously he is fit and fine, hungry to go,” Gambhir told reporters.

Gill Returns After India’s Turbulent Test and ODI Phase

During Gill’s absence, India had to make significant adjustments. Rishabh Pant stepped in as captain in the second Test in Guwahati—a match that ended in India’s biggest-ever Test defeat by runs. The batting struggled under pressure, and Gill’s dependable presence was sorely missed.

In the ODI series that followed, Yashasvi Jaiswal opened in Gill’s place alongside Rohit Sharma. Jaiswal eventually delivered a breakthrough innings in the series decider at Vizag, scoring his maiden ODI hundred and helping India secure a 2-1 victory. Despite Jaiswal’s success, Gill’s return to the T20 format is crucial, especially with the team eyeing long-term combinations leading up to future ICC events.

Gill is set to reunite with Abhishek Sharma, a close friend and opening partner in various domestic and IPL fixtures. The left-right duo will now look to give India solid starts in a challenging T20I series.

Hardik Pandya Also Back After Over Two Months Out

India’s squad receives another major boost with the comeback of star allrounder Hardik Pandya, who had been out of action for more than two months due to injury. His return provides India with greater balance, especially in the middle overs and death overs, both with bat and ball.

Hardik’s absence had forced India to experiment with several combinations in both the batting lineup and the bowling attack. With Hardik back, along with Shivam Dube and Axar Patel also available, India will enter the South Africa series with a deep all-round core.
