The price of broiler chicken meat in Lahore has once again recorded a significant spike, with a fresh increase of Rs. 21 per kilogram noted on Thursday. The latest hike brings the retail price of chicken meat to Rs. 482 per kilogram, raising serious affordability concerns for households across the city.
Over the past two days, prices have surged by a total of Rs. 58 per kilogram, underlining persistent volatility in the poultry market.
Live Chicken Rates Also on the Rise
In addition to processed chicken meat, the prices of live broiler chicken have also seen an upward trend:
- Wholesale rate: Rs. 319 per kilogram
- Retail rate: Rs. 333 per kilogram
This sudden escalation in both live and dressed chicken prices is being felt across butcher shops, supermarkets, and local markets throughout Lahore.
Market Sources Cite Supply Chain Disruptions and Demand Spike
According to traders and wholesalers, the recent hike is largely due to:
- Supply chain disruptions, possibly linked to weather, feed cost issues, or logistical constraints.
- Increased demand, particularly ahead of weekends or anticipated gatherings.
However, no official statement has been released by price control authorities or the Punjab Livestock Department, leaving the public and retailers without clear guidance on when prices might stabilize.
Consumers Struggle With Soaring Food Costs
Consumers have expressed frustration over the continued rise in essential food prices. Many households, especially those with limited income, are finding it difficult to afford basic proteins like chicken.
Govt Clarifies: No Tax on All Bank Transactions, Only Non-Filers Affected by Cash Withdrawal WHT
“I used to buy chicken twice a week. Now I have to cut down to once, or even skip it altogether,” said a shopper in Lahore’s Ichhra Market. “The price keeps going up, but our salaries don’t.”
Retailers, too, are caught in the middle—struggling to adjust prices without losing customers, while facing increased procurement costs from wholesalers.
Price Monitoring Authorities Yet to Intervene
Despite the steep and rapid price increase, the Punjab government and local administration have yet to issue a response or introduce any price control measures.
In previous instances of similar volatility, district administrations have launched crackdowns on overcharging, but so far, there has been no such action this week.
