Federal Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif on Friday announced that PIA Investment Ltd has finally received $11 million in compliance with an arbitration award issued in its favor 13 years ago. The funds were credited to the company’s account on Thursday evening, according to a post shared by the minister on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

28-Year Journey From Dispute to Implementation

The minister emphasized that it took an astonishing 28 years from the beginning of the arbitration proceedings to the actual enforcement of the award. While the arbitration was settled more than a decade ago, the financial settlement had remained pending—until now.

“It took 28 years for the arbitration and the implementation of arbitration award,” Khawaja Asif stated in his post.

Details of Dispute Withheld

Although the announcement signals the resolution of a prolonged legal battle, no specific details were provided regarding:

  • The parties involved in the arbitration
  • The nature of the dispute
  • The jurisdiction or legal framework under which the arbitration was conducted

The minister refrained from disclosing whether the case involved property, contracts, international assets, or other commercial dealings related to PIA or its subsidiaries.

PIA Investment Ltd: An Overview

PIA Investment Ltd is a subsidiary of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), responsible for managing the national carrier’s international assets and investments, which have included properties like the Roosevelt Hotel in New York and Scribe Hotel in Paris in the past.

The company has been involved in several complex legal and commercial matters over the years, often relating to overseas holdings and contractual obligations.

Significance of the Recovery

The receipt of the $11 million comes at a time when Pakistan’s aviation and financial sectors are under pressure from mounting liabilities and restructuring efforts. The successful enforcement of a long-overdue arbitration award may:

  • Improve cash flow for PIA Investment Ltd
  • Enhance investor confidence in Pakistan’s legal resolution mechanisms
  • Support the ongoing privatization and reform processes in the aviation sector
