ISLAMABAD – Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghadam has confirmed that diplomatic channels between Tehran and Washington remain active, with Pakistan playing a central role in bridging communication between the two sides .
Speaking on Geo News program “Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath” on May 2, the ambassador said that while no direct US-Iran talks are currently scheduled in Islamabad, “the channels remain active and the process is ongoing via backchannel communication through Pakistan” .
Ambassador Moghadam expressed hope that the differences between the two nations would be resolved soon. “I want to thank Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and the rest of the Pakistani leadership for their tireless efforts in bringing both sides closer to signing a potential agreement,” he stated .
His remarks came two days after Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei announced a “new management” system for the Strait of Hormuz, which he said would bring “calm, progress and economic benefits to all Gulf nations” while declaring the region’s future would be “without America” .
The confirmation of continued backchannel diplomacy suggests that despite public posturing and stalled formal negotiations, behind-the-scenes efforts to de-escalate the conflict remain active. Pakistan has positioned itself as a key mediator since brokering a fragile ceasefire in early April .
The ambassador did not provide a timeline for when direct talks might resume, but his optimistic tone indicated that progress is being made through Pakistani intermediaries . The development comes as oil prices remain elevated above $115 per barrel due to the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz .
