India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire after four consecutive days of intense military confrontations involving missile strikes, aerial incursions, and cyberattacks. The announcement, made on Saturday, comes following high-level diplomatic efforts led by the United States amid rising fears that the long-standing Kashmir dispute could spiral into a full-scale conflict between two nuclear powers.
US President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both countries on using common sense and great intelligence.”
Ceasefire Agreement Confirmed by Both Nations
Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also confirmed the agreement via a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!”
India’s Ministry of External Affairs released a statement noting that the Director-General of Military Operations from both nations had spoken and agreed to halt all military actions along the Line of Control (LoC), with further dialogue scheduled for May 12.
The ceasefire comes as the civilian death toll on both sides reportedly climbed to at least 66, fueling international concern over the escalating violence.
Roots of the Conflict: Kashmir Attack and Retaliation
The most recent flare-up began on May 7, when India conducted airstrikes on what it labeled “terrorist infrastructure” in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), following a deadly attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, where 26 Indian tourists were killed. India blamed Pakistan for harboring the attackers, a claim Islamabad strongly denied.
In retaliation, Pakistan launched “Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos,” targeting several Indian military installations including the Pathankot and Udhampur air bases. The strikes also reportedly destroyed strategic Indian assets such as the BrahMos missile storage sites and an Indian Army brigade headquarters in Uri.
Cyberattacks and Airspace Disruptions Heighten Tensions
Alongside conventional warfare, Pakistan also reportedly launched cyberattacks disabling up to 70% of India’s power grid and targeting key Indian websites and infrastructure. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) website, as well as portals linked to India’s military and communication sectors, were temporarily taken offline.
Pakistan’s airspace, which was closed amid rising tensions, was reopened late Saturday following the ceasefire announcement. A spokesperson for the Pakistan Airports Authority confirmed that all flights had resumed normal operations.
US and International Diplomacy Push for Peace
The United States played a central role in mediating the ceasefire. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly spoke directly with Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, urging restraint and offering US assistance in de-escalating tensions.
Rubio emphasized the need for dialogue and expressed concern over the regional implications of continued hostilities. Dar, in return, reiterated Pakistan’s willingness to engage diplomatically if India halted aggressive actions.
The Group of Seven (G7) nations also issued a joint statement urging both countries to exercise maximum restraint. “We strongly condemn the attack on tourists in Indian Kashmir and urge immediate de-escalation,” the statement read.
Military Damage and Fallout from the Escalation
Security sources from both sides have acknowledged significant losses. India reportedly suffered the destruction of several airbases and military outposts, while Pakistan claims to have downed five Indian Air Force jets and dozens of drones.

Pakistan’s armed forces claim they used Fateh-1 missiles and JF-17 Thunder jets to execute precise strikes. The destruction of India’s S-400 air defense system at Adampur airbase marked a significant strategic blow, according to Pakistani defense sources.
Looking Ahead: Fragile Peace or Temporary Pause?
While the ceasefire is a welcome development, analysts warn that the situation remains fragile. The decades-old dispute over Kashmir continues to be a flashpoint for violence, and both sides have a history of brief truces collapsing under renewed provocations.
With both India and Pakistan having mobilized troops and increased military presence along the LoC, sustained diplomatic engagement will be necessary to prevent further escalation. The upcoming dialogue between military officials on May 12 will be a critical test of the ceasefire’s durability.
