Under the framework, all inbound vessels would use a northern shipping lane through Iranian waters, while outbound traffic would utilize a southern lane in Omani waters . No tolls or transit fees would be imposed during this temporary 60-day period .
Key Components and Timeline
The parties would also work to clear naval mines from the median shipping lane within 30 days . Once cleared, this central corridor would handle both inbound and outbound traffic under a permanent agreement to be negotiated between Oman and Iran .
According to regional sources, Iran’s leadership, including Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, completed the approval process for the proposed agreement on Tuesday .
Mediation and International Involvement
Beyond the Oman-Iran track, officials from Qatar, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia have played key mediation roles . Pakistan and Qatar are continuing their efforts to de-escalate tensions .
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff has held multiple conversations with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi in recent days . Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei noted that talks are moving forward but added that “the Strait of Hormuz is still not secure” due to what Tehran describes as US naval blockade and “aggressive and threatening actions against Iran” .
