Khamenei Rejects US Nuclear Proposal, Defends Iran’s Enrichment Rights

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has firmly dismissed a central demand of the United States in the ongoing negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear programme — the abandonment of uranium enrichment. In a televised speech on Wednesday, Khamenei declared that halting enrichment would be “100% against Iran’s national interests,” signaling strong resistance to US conditions for a potential new nuclear agreement.

Key Obstacle in US-Iran Talks: Uranium Enrichment

The US proposal, delivered last Saturday via Oman — a longstanding diplomatic mediator in the region — included a condition that Iran cease its uranium enrichment activities. This request, as well as a call for Tehran to ship its current stockpile of highly enriched uranium abroad, has emerged as a major sticking point in talks.

So far, five rounds of negotiations have taken place, involving Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and Steve Witkoff, President Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy. While both sides have expressed some willingness to reach an accord, several core differences remain unresolved.

Khamenei: Enrichment Is a Symbol of Sovereignty and Progress

Speaking on the anniversary of the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the Islamic Republic’s founder, Khamenei reinforced his longstanding position that Iran’s nuclear programme is non-negotiable when it comes to uranium enrichment.

“Uranium enrichment is the key to our nuclear programme and the enemies have focused on the enrichment,” Khamenei stated.
“The proposal that the Americans have presented is 100% against our interests … The rude and arrogant leaders of America repeatedly demand that we should not have a nuclear programme. Who are you to decide whether Iran should have enrichment?”

His remarks reflect Iran’s continued emphasis on self-reliance and resistance to foreign pressure, particularly from the West.

Talks Continue, But Iran Refuses to Back Down

While Khamenei did not signal a withdrawal from the talks, his speech clearly outlined Iran’s non-negotiable stance on maintaining enrichment capabilities on its own soil. This could severely complicate efforts to revive or renegotiate a framework similar to the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) — the nuclear agreement from which the US unilaterally withdrew in 2018.

The Supreme Leader’s position also reaffirms Iran’s refusal to export its enriched uranium, a step that Western powers consider essential to minimizing the risk of the material being used for weapons production.

Iran Defends Its Right to Peaceful Nuclear Development

Iran has long maintained that its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes, such as energy generation and medical research. The Islamic Republic denies accusations by Western governments and intelligence agencies that it is pursuing nuclear weapons.

Nonetheless, Iran’s recent advances in enrichment — including high-level enrichment beyond JCPOA limits — have raised alarms globally, especially as regional tensions in the Middle East remain high.

Geopolitical Implications and the Path Ahead

The standoff over enrichment highlights the broader struggle between Iran’s assertion of sovereignty and Western efforts to limit proliferation risks. With tensions between Washington and Tehran persisting — even amid shifting US administrations — the possibility of a breakthrough deal remains uncertain.

However, regional mediators like Oman continue to play a crucial role in keeping communication channels open. Whether the US adjusts its stance or Iran concedes on technical details remains to be seen.
