A senior executive working for Tech Mahindra has been detained in Qatar for nearly three months without facing any formal charges, sparking concern for his well-being and raising diplomatic concerns between India and Qatar. Amit Gupta, who has been with the Mumbai-based IT firm for over a decade, was arrested on January 1 by Qatari state security forces while dining at a restaurant in Doha. His family, who have been struggling to get answers, has alleged that he is being held in solitary confinement and is not being informed of the accusations against him.

Detention in Solitary Confinement and Limited Contact

According to Gupta’s father, Jagdish, the family first learned of his arrest after receiving a call from Qatar, and they immediately traveled to the country in an attempt to meet him. During their stay, they were permitted just one 30-minute visit with Amit. Gupta’s mother claimed that her son was initially kept without food for 48 hours before being transferred to a confined room, where he has remained since his arrest. Gupta is reportedly allowed a brief five-minute phone call every Wednesday.

The lack of transparency regarding the nature of his detention has left the family deeply concerned. Despite their efforts, Qatari authorities have not provided formal charges or specific reasons for his arrest, although reports suggest that it may be related to an ongoing investigation into data theft. The family believes that Gupta’s senior position within Tech Mahindra may be a contributing factor to his detention.

Gupta’s Role at Tech Mahindra

Amit Gupta, who has worked with Tech Mahindra for 12 years, was appointed regional head for Qatar and Kuwait in 2022. He had been residing in Qatar since 2013. His role at the company and his longstanding presence in the country made his sudden and unexplained detention even more perplexing for both his family and the company. With no clear explanation from Qatari authorities, his family continues to seek answers and demands diplomatic intervention.

Diplomatic Concerns and Legal Implications

The Indian Embassy in Qatar has been providing consular support to Gupta’s family throughout the ordeal. However, despite their involvement, no formal statement has been issued by the embassy regarding the arrest or the ongoing legal situation. The Indian government has been urged to take a more active role in securing Gupta’s release.

This case has raised diplomatic concerns reminiscent of a high-profile incident in 2022 when Qatar detained eight former Indian Navy officers on espionage charges. These officers were sentenced to death before being released in 2024 following diplomatic efforts from India.

Indian lawmaker Hemang Joshi has assured Gupta’s family that the matter will be raised with authorities in New Delhi, though Qatar has yet to provide an explanation or indication of whether formal charges will be filed against him.

Potential Legal Ramifications

If convicted under Qatari law, which incorporates aspects of Sharia principles, Gupta could face severe penalties, including imprisonment and fines. The lack of clarity on the nature of his detention has left his family frustrated, as they continue to push for more information and a resolution to the case.

As the situation remains unresolved, Gupta’s family is calling for immediate diplomatic intervention to ensure his release and the protection of his rights. They are hopeful that, with increased international attention, the Qatari authorities will be compelled to provide answers regarding the reason for his detention and the charges, if any, he may face.
