Amid rising hostilities across the Line of Control (LoC), Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has warned of a “strong response” to any future terrorist attacks and said India will no longer tolerate what he termed “nuclear blackmail” from Pakistan. His comments came in a televised national address—the first since India’s missile strikes on Pakistani territory.
“If another terrorist attack against India is carried out, a strong response will be given,” Modi declared. “India will strike with precision and decisiveness against the terrorist groups thriving under the cover of nuclear blackmail.”
Modi accused Pakistan of backing terrorism rather than cooperating to eliminate it, adding:
“Terror and talks cannot go together… Terror and trade cannot go together… Water and blood cannot flow together.”
Pakistan Rejects Drone Incursion Claims as “Fabricated”
Pakistan, in turn, has strongly rejected Indian media claims alleging that Pakistani drones had violated Indian airspace near the LoC. Security sources in Islamabad called the reports “fabricated and baseless,” accusing Indian media of once again spreading disinformation.
“Indian media is once again airing false and concocted stories about Pakistani drone activity near the LoC,” the sources told local press. They added that no Pakistani drone had crossed into Indian territory, calling the accusations a continuation of a “long-standing pattern of misinformation.”
Pakistani security officials also claimed that India was the real violator of the ceasefire agreement, noting repeated drone incursions and strikes by Indian forces along both the LoC and the Working Boundary.
Trump Claims U.S. Averted a Nuclear Crisis
As tensions escalated between the two nuclear-armed rivals, U.S. President Donald Trump weighed in, claiming that American diplomatic intervention had averted a “bad nuclear war” between India and Pakistan.
“We stopped a nuclear conflict… millions of people could have been killed. So I’m very proud of that,” Trump said at the White House on Monday.
The statement came after the U.S. reportedly played a behind-the-scenes role in brokering a temporary ceasefire amid fears of full-scale war.
Background: April 22 Attack Sparks Retaliatory Strikes
The current escalation was triggered by a deadly attack on tourists in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) on April 22, which left 26 civilians dead. India immediately blamed Pakistan-based militants for the incident—an allegation Pakistan has denied.
Following the attack, Indian forces launched missile strikes before dawn on May 6, reportedly targeting civilian areas inside Pakistan, leading to multiple casualties, including children.
Pakistan Retaliates: 26 Indian Military Sites Targeted
In response, Pakistan’s military launched a significant retaliatory operation. On Sunday, Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, Director General of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), confirmed that the Pakistan Armed Forces hit 26 Indian military installations in a coordinated strike.
Trump Claims U.S. Averted Nuclear War Between India and Pakistan
Lt Gen Chaudhry said the operation was in direct retaliation for the Indian attack that killed innocent Pakistani civilians, and that the military had fulfilled its promise to avenge the “martyrdom of children and civilians” during the Indian strike.
As part of the operation, dozens of Pakistani drones reportedly hovered over major Indian cities, including the capital New Delhi, in what was described as a show of strength and capability.
Nuclear Rhetoric Raises Alarm
Modi’s reference to nuclear blackmail and the broader rhetoric from both sides have raised fears of nuclear escalation, a scenario that the international community has long feared could emerge from any full-blown conflict between India and Pakistan.
India and Pakistan have fought multiple wars and numerous border skirmishes since partition in 1947. Both countries possess nuclear weapons and have repeatedly clashed over the disputed region of Kashmir, often bringing the region—and the world—dangerously close to a wider conflict.
Ceasefire Fragile, Outlook Uncertain
Although a temporary ceasefire has reportedly been achieved, tensions remain dangerously high. Both sides continue to trade barbs over drone activity, cross-border strikes, and ceasefire violations.
With global powers watching closely, analysts warn that without sustained diplomatic engagement and a de-escalation of military rhetoric, the current truce could collapse under the weight of mistrust and nationalism.
