Forecast Highlights

According to PMD, the forecast is based on a comprehensive analysis of eight global seasonal prediction models. Key highlights include:

  • Central and southern Pakistan, including Punjab and Kashmir, are expected to receive normal to slightly above-normal rainfall during the July–August–September (JAS) period.
  • Northern regions such as Gilgit-Baltistan and northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) may experience normal to slightly below-normal rainfall.

Weather Hazards Anticipated

The combination of increased rainfall and soaring temperatures may result in several hazards, including:

  • Riverine floods due to intense precipitation in catchment zones.
  • Urban and flash flooding in cities and hilly areas of Punjab, KP, Sindh, and AJK, especially early in the monsoon season.
  • Dust storms, strong winds, and hailstorms due to rising temperature gradients.
  • Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in Gilgit-Baltistan and upper KP, triggered by rapid snowmelt from abnormally high temperatures.

Potential Positive Impacts

On the brighter side, PMD notes that monsoon rainfall will help:

  • Replenish national water reservoirs.
  • Improve irrigation for agriculture.
  • Boost hydropower generation capacity, aiding energy production during peak demand.
